The Eco-Friendly Bride: How to be Sustainable on Your Big Day

When it comes down to it, there’s no such thing as wedding season. Brides and grooms and anything in between walk down the aisle every day. If you’re reading this blog, I’d imagine you yourself are planning your big day, something you hope will be nothing short of an intimate gathering that will cement itself in your brain for the rest of your lives. I bet you're wondering how you can bring sustainability into all of the aspects. After all, it's important to be eo-friendly year-round, and your wedding day shouldn't be an exception. Weddings are supposedly stressful. As a single person, I am just as clueless as the next person. What I do know is that they require an immense amount of planning and strategic thought. You have to coordinate tons of people, from the wedding party to the caterers to the venue owners. It can be a lot to take on for two people. And bringing sustainability into the mix? That adds a whole other layer to the already complicated equation. That's why I've scoured the web for the best ways to host a sustainable wedding.

Buy Local Flowers or Rent Them

Flowers really seal the deal, don't they? It's a necessary staple to every wedding. It's really not complete without them. With this, you can buy local flowers to cut down on your carbon footprint. Supporting local businesses is also a great way to generate revenue for your city or town. Another option is to rent them. That way, you know they're going to get reused. Either way, you’re going to be benefitting the environment.

Get Married and Have Your Reception Outdoors

I can't think of a better way to connect with nature and cut down on electricity than getting married outside. Bonus points if you utilize sustainable candles when the sun goes down. Just be sure to leave the area exactly how you found it. That’s super important.

Charity Registry

Want to make a difference and don't need anything major for your home? Opt for a charity registry. You can change the world, all with just one day. It's the little things that count, because a little goes a long way.

Upcycle or Reuse Wedding Decorations

Upcycling is a super fun way to make do with what you can find. For example, you can find plates and silverware at thrift stores. Another great idea is to pick out decorations you can use in your home decor. Pick a color scheme for your wedding that you'll actually be able to reuse in your home or apartment and use flowers that you can place around your home.

Limit Stationary

Last but not least, limit your usage of stationary. You can do this by sending e-vites and getting RSVPs done through a website. It will cut down on paper and conserve the energy it takes to mail a letter, thus also reducing your carbon footprint.

Below are items you can place on your registry, should you choose to go that route. For more information on what makes a gift eco-friendly, check out this blog.
